Talk: Lean Product in a Huge Company: How to Stay Daring
As a Product Management consultant for Pivotal Labs, I teach enterprise teams how to adopt the Lean Product philosophy. In a recent engagement with a Fortune-100 insurance company, our team launched version 1 of our product in just 28 days, shattering the company’s previous records. Our app currently has a higher conversion rate than any other line of business at the company.
At first, our team struggled to stay lean within the traditional waterfall organization. Stakeholders and other teams exerted implicit and explicit pressures to commit to requirements early and accomplish divergent goals. In a culture of fear, caution, and cook-filled kitchens, “minimum viable products” often took 9 months or more to launch.
Our challenge was to instill the client team with the daring ethos laid out in Eric Reis’s THE LEAN STARTUP, to create an island of Lean. In this talk, I discuss the strategies we used to hit our 28-day launch. I will draw from Eric Reis’s new book on scaled lean thinking, THE LEADER’S GUIDE.
Attendees will leave with insight into how even the most entrenched corporate cultures can begin a tangible and measurable shift towards an iterative, learning-based, customer-centered culture of shipping software.
